95-Year-Old Man Dies by Suicide in Gwalior; Police Probe Family Dispute Angle

A 95-year-old man allegedly died by suicide after using his licensed firearm at his residence in Gwalior on Friday night, police said, adding that a note recovered from the scene indicates he had been distressed over family disputes.

The deceased, identified as Ramadhar Gupta, lived in Nehru Colony under the jurisdiction of the local Thatipur police station. According to investigators, family members heard a gunshot from his room and rushed inside, where they found him unresponsive. He was declared dead at the scene before medical help could arrive.

Police said a licensed 12-bore rifle was recovered near the body and has been seized as evidence. Officers reached the house shortly after receiving information and began a preliminary inquiry. The body was later sent for post-mortem examination, while forensic personnel documented the scene and collected material evidence.

Station in-charge Vipendra Singh Chauhan confirmed that a case has been registered and that investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the death. “An elderly man died after a self-inflicted gunshot injury. We have secured the scene and initiated legal procedures. The exact cause and sequence of events are under investigation,” he said.

Family members told police that Ramadhar had been alone in his room at the time of the incident while others were occupied elsewhere in the house. Officials said the note recovered from the spot suggests he had been under emotional strain linked to domestic disagreements. Authorities, however, said they are verifying the authenticity of the note and examining whether other factors contributed.

Neighbours described the deceased as a long-time resident of the locality who had previously operated a dairy business that is now managed by his son. Police said statements from relatives and neighbours are being recorded as part of the inquiry.

Incidents involving elderly individuals taking extreme steps are often associated with social isolation, health concerns, or family stress, according to officials familiar with such cases. Investigators said they will also review medical history and personal records, if available, to establish a clearer picture.

Police urged citizens to seek timely assistance for elderly family members experiencing distress and said community awareness plays a key role in prevention. Further findings will depend on forensic results and witness statements, officials added.
