Assistant Professor accuses HOD of threats and intimidation, prompting internal investigation.
In a case that has raised concerns about workplace environment at one of India's premier medical institutions, Dr. Shruti Dubey, an Assistant Professor at AIIMS Bhopal, has filed a formal complaint alleging mental harassment, threats, and intimidation by her department head, Dr. Mohammad Yunus. The institute's Internal Complaints Committee has taken cognizance of the matter and begun proceedings.
The Allegations
According to the detailed complaint filed by Dr. Dubey, who works in the Department of Trauma and Emergency Medicine, the incident occurred on August 7, 2025, at approximately 10:40 AM within the ICU's counselling room .
Dr. Dubey alleges that Dr. Yunus entered the room without prior notice and ordered her to report to duty in the Trauma Department. When she informed him that her posting in the ICU was based on the Executive Director's order, Dr. Yunus reportedly dismissed these orders as having "no value" and warned that not following his instructions could adversely affect her approval period .
The assistant professor stated in her complaint, "I was forced to sit alone in the room with him and felt extremely uncomfortable," describing the experience as threatening . She further alleged that just 20 minutes later, during a departmental meeting, Dr. Yunus publicly humiliated her in front of faculty members and residents, falsely claiming she had agreed to work in the Trauma Department. When she corrected this, he reportedly shouted, "You are not needed here" .
Impact and Response
The repeated incidents have taken a significant toll on Dr. Dubey, who stated that the "constant mental pressure has made her feel unsafe in the workplace" . She expressed concern that working in such an environment could harm her mental health and professional future, and has indicated she may consider resignation if the situation does not improve .
The AIIMS Bhopal administration has confirmed receiving the complaint, and sources indicate that the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) has begun recording statements from those involved . The administration has assured that the inquiry will be fair and impartial, ensuring safety and dignity for all employees at the institute .
The Other Side
In a contrasting development, another female doctor from the same department has come forward in support of Dr. Yunus . This senior professor claimed that the HOD had merely called Dr. Dubey for a meeting to maintain discipline and assign departmental duties that she had been avoiding .
According to this account, Dr. Dubey had "not taken regular classes or participated seriously in departmental activities for over a year," and only filed the complaint when the HOD enforced discipline .
Dr. Yunus has dismissed all claims as "baseless," telling media, "The matter is before the ICC, and I have already submitted my response" .
Institutional Implications
This case emerges against a backdrop of similar recent complaints at AIIMS institutions. In October 2025, AIIMS Delhi removed Dr. AK Bisoi as head of the Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery department following harassment allegations by a female nursing officer . That case sparked protests from faculty members demanding reinstatement, while nursing unions emphasized the need for a safe workplace .
As the Internal Complaints Committee at AIIMS Bhopal continues its investigation, the outcome will be closely watched for its implications on workplace safety and institutional accountability within India's premier medical education system .
