An Air India flight bound for Mumbai was halted moments before take-off at Indore’s Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport on Wednesday evening after the pilot received a cockpit fire warning. The quick response from Air Traffic Control (ATC) averted a potential safety risk, though passengers remained confined to the aircraft for nearly four hours.
According to officials, flight AI-2750 was scheduled to depart at 7:50 PM when the fire indication alarm appeared just as the aircraft was preparing for take-off. ATC immediately instructed the pilot to abort the departure. Engineers were called to inspect the aircraft while all 163 passengers remained seated inside.
The inspection continued for several hours before the aircraft was declared safe. It finally departed for Mumbai at 11:41 PMalmost four hours behind schedule.
Passengers, however, expressed frustration over the prolonged delay and alleged poor communication from airline staff. Several travellers said they were not provided with clear information or refreshments during the wait. A relative of one passenger has filed a complaint with Director General Faiz Ahmed Kidwai of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, seeking accountability for the lapse.
The incident added to a day of widespread flight delays at Indore Airport. Multiple flights operated by IndiGo and Air India faced disruptions ranging from one to four hours due to operational issues.
Frequent delays at the airport have drawn concern from passengers and aviation observers, who are urging authorities to review maintenance and scheduling systems to prevent recurring disruptions.
Air India has yet to issue an official statement regarding the cause of the fire alert or the extended delay, though officials confirmed that all passengers reached Mumbai safely early Thursday morning.
