A horrific late-night collision on National Highway 43 in Madhya Pradesh's Anuppur district has claimed two lives and left two others in critical condition.

A night that began as a routine return journey turned into a nightmare for four residents of Rajnagar on Thursday. A speeding car rammed into a diesel-loaded tractor-trolley near Nigwani Tiraha, close to Rajendra Filling Station in the Kotma police station area of Anuppur district on NH-43. The impact was so devastating that the car was completely mangled while the tractor-trolley overturned into an adjacent field. Two of the four occupants of the car died on the spot, and two others are fighting for their lives.

What Happened That Night

The accident occurred at approximately 8:30 PM on Thursday. The four passengers — all from the Rajnagar area — were returning home after visiting Shahdol for medical treatment. As their car approached Nigwani Tiraha near Kotma, it slammed into the tractor-trolley coming from the front at high speed. The collision was head-on and catastrophic.

The car was torn apart on impact. The tractor-trolley lost control and crashed into a farm field off the highway. National Highway 43 came to a standstill for a period as locals and passersby rushed to help, alerting police and ambulance services. Officers from Kotma Police Station reached the scene within 10 minutes of receiving the call.

The Victims — A Driver Who Never Made It Home

The two people who lost their lives were Pyare Sharma (45), the car's driver, and Geeta Panika (44), both residents of Rajnagar. Pyare Sharma suffered severe head and chest injuries in the crash and was found trapped in the steering wheel — a sight that left bystanders shaken. Geeta Panika sustained a deep head wound with profuse bleeding. Both succumbed to their injuries at the scene before any medical help could reach them.

The two critically injured passengers — Meena Dewangan (33) of Manendragarh and Harishankar Chaturvedi (62) — were first rushed to Kotma Hospital. Given the severity of their condition, they were subsequently referred to the district hospital for advanced treatment.

Chaos on NH-43 — and a Grim Scene

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos following the crash. While local residents and commuters scrambled to call for help, the injured were seen in agony inside the wreckage. The driver's body was pinned to the steering wheel, and others were trapped within the crumpled frame of the car. Ambulance and police responders worked to extract the victims from the debris.

The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem examination. Kotma Police have registered a case of unnatural death and launched a full investigation into the cause of the accident. Speeding on this stretch of NH-43 in Anuppur has been a persistent concern for residents and highway authorities alike.

A Recurring Danger on NH-43

The Anuppur district administration and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) must urgently review safety infrastructure on this stretch — including rumble strips, speed cameras, reflective signage and proper lighting near Nigwani Tiraha and other accident-prone points. Night patrolling must be intensified.

Two families are grieving tonight. The least the authorities owe them — and thousands of daily commuters on NH-43 — is action, not just an inquiry.
