A Bangladeshi woman was arrested from a flat in Gwalior’s City Center Govindpuri area on Friday night for her alleged involvement in sex work. Police said the woman, a resident of Dhaka, had entered India illegally eight months ago through Kolkata. A local man found with her was also detained.
Acting on a tip-off, CSP University Hina Khan led a late-night raid at the rented flat, where the woman was found without valid identification documents. Preliminary investigation confirmed her Bangladeshi nationality. During the search, police recovered a mobile phone containing several suspicious chats and foreign numbers, raising concerns about an interstate or international trafficking network.
During interrogation, the woman revealed she had been brought to India by a Bangladeshi broker identified as Anis Sheikh, who allegedly forced her into sex work. After arriving in Delhi via Kolkata, she was shifted to Gwalior, where she came into contact with a man named Rajendra. Police suspect he was part of the local operation facilitating her activities.
ASP Vinita Dagar confirmed that an investigation is underway to identify others linked to the network. “The woman has confessed that she was brought from Bangladesh for sex work. We are verifying her claims and tracking possible links to other cities,” Dagar said.
The police are also checking whether she used fake travel documents to enter India. Investigators believe more women may have been trafficked through similar routes and deployed across different states.
The arrest comes amid an ongoing crackdown on illegal Bangladeshi nationals in Gwalior. Last month, an eight-member Bangladeshi family was detained from the Maharajpura area and placed in a holding facility. Police say efforts are on to expose the full extent of the trafficking network operating in the region.
