Bhopal Coach Factory Secures CII's Top Green Platinum Rating

The Passenger Coach Refurbishment Factory in Bhopal has clinched the prestigious Green Platinum Award from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), becoming the sixth Indian Railways unit to earn the highest sustainability certification.

The award recognizes the factory's outstanding efforts in energy efficiency, waste management, and carbon reduction. It stands alone as the only facility under West Central Railway to reach this pinnacle in CII's GreenCo framework.

Inspectors evaluated the site thoroughly, praising measures like reduced electricity and fuel use, responsible material handling in coach refurbishment, and sharp drops in emissions.

Key initiatives drove the success. A 711.25 kW solar plant slashed power consumption by 37 percent over the past year, saving roughly Rs 34 lakh annually in bills.

Water conservation shone too. Rainwater harvesting in five buildings recharges nearly 29 lakh liters underground each year. A 5 lakh-liter daily sewage treatment plant, featuring advanced ozone processing, handles 3.5 lakh liters now—reusing it all for gardening, bio-tanks, and coach washing, ditching fresh water entirely for those needs.

The 400-acre campus boasts expanded green cover, with 1,000 saplings planted in two years; 41 percent qualifies as green built-up area. Existing ISO certifications for quality and environment bolster the record, alongside a recent Diamond safety award from Madhya Pradesh authorities.

Chief Factory Manager Prafulla V Kohade credited staff commitment and ongoing maintenance for the milestone.

This recognition aligns with Indian Railways' push toward net-zero emissions by 2030, highlighting how targeted upgrades in legacy facilities can deliver big environmental and financial gains.
