A young man was beaten by members of a Hindu organisation in Bhanpur, Bhopal, over allegations of “love jihad,” but the woman involved has told police that no wrongdoing occurred. The incident has sparked concerns about vigilante actions and social media circulation of assault footage.
The victim, identified as Shanu Khan, a resident of Eitkhedi–Ayodhya Nagar, was returning from meeting a Hindu girl on Sunday night when activists of the Maa Bhawani Hindu organisation stopped him. The group held him for over an hour and a half, assaulted him, and questioned him on camera. Visible injuries were reported on both of Shanu’s eyes.
During the incident, the activists checked Shanu’s mobile phone and found WhatsApp chats with the girl. They claimed this indicated inappropriate conduct. The group later submitted a complaint at the Chhola Mandir Police Station, asserting that authorities had failed to respond promptly.
However, the young woman identified in the videos filed a statement with the police clarifying that she had no objection to Shanu and that nothing untoward had occurred. She identified Shanu as a former acquaintance and requested that no action be taken.
Saraswati Chauhan, in-charge of Chhola Mandir Police Station, confirmed the woman’s statement, noting that Shanu had not committed any offence. Based on her application, police declined to take further action.
The case highlights ongoing tensions surrounding “love jihad” allegations in India, which have occasionally resulted in vigilante attacks. Social media circulation of the incident video has intensified public attention, prompting local authorities to review safety measures and public conduct during similar disputes.
While the victim sustained injuries, no arrests have been made, and police have appealed to citizens to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. The incident underscores the importance of adhering to legal procedures in personal disputes to prevent escalation.
