A third-year MBBS student of LN Medical College died after allegedly jumping from the fifth floor of a residential building in Bhopal’s Kolar area, police said on Sunday. The student, identified as 21-year-old Sachin Singh, succumbed to his injuries during treatment at a private hospital nearly a day after the incident.
The incident took place early Saturday morning at Premium Tower Phase-1, where Sachin was living in a rented flat with three other medical students. He reportedly jumped from the balcony of the fifth floor and was immediately rushed to hospital in a critical condition. Despite sustained medical efforts, he died on Sunday evening.
Police officials said no other person was present on the balcony at the time of the incident. Statements of his roommates, friends, and classmates have been recorded as part of the investigation. No suicide note was recovered from the flat or the scene, police confirmed.
Preliminary investigation suggests that Sachin had been under significant mental stress for the past three months. According to police, he was emotionally distressed after a close female friend, who studied with him at the same medical college, stopped communicating with him. Investigators believe the prolonged emotional strain may have contributed to his deteriorating mental health and depression.
TI Sanjay Soni said that on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, Sachin had gone to meet the woman, during which he reportedly spoke about suicidal thoughts. Alarmed by the conversation, the woman contacted Sachin’s friends and asked them to remain vigilant about his mental state.
After returning to his flat, Sachin reportedly behaved normally and went to sleep. However, the next morning, he jumped from the balcony under circumstances that are still being examined.
Sachin was originally from outside Bhopal and was considered academically stable by peers, according to preliminary accounts. His family has been informed, and police have completed initial legal formalities. A postmortem examination has been conducted, and the report is awaited.
Police said all aspects of the case are being investigated to establish a complete sequence of events. Authorities also noted that the incident underscores the growing mental health pressures faced by medical students and the need for timely emotional support, counseling mechanisms, and institutional safeguards.
