Bhopal Metro Parking Plan in Focus Ahead of Civic Budget

Bhopal Metro parking proposal for 14 facilities, including five at metro stations, to be tabled in March 23 civic budget, aiming to ease commuter woes

The Bhopal Metro parking proposal is set to take centre stage as the Bhopal Municipal Corporation prepares to present its ₹3,500 crore budget on March 23. Officials indicated that plans to develop 14 dedicated parking facilities across the city, including five at metro stations, will be placed before the council for approval.

The move comes amid growing commuter concerns over the absence of parking infrastructure at operational metro stations in the city.

Parking Plan Details

According to officials, the proposed parking facilities will be designed to accommodate around 40 four-wheelers and 250 two-wheelers at each location. Of the 14 sites, five will be developed beneath key metro stations to directly support metro users.

The proposal has already received clearance from the Mayor-in-Council during its meeting on March 16 and is now awaiting final approval in the upcoming council session.

Metro Stations Affected

The issue is most visible along the Bhopal Metro Orange Line priority corridor, which spans 6.22 km and includes eight stations such as Subhash Nagar, Kendriya School, DB Mall, MP Nagar, Rani Kamlapati, DRM Tiraha, Alkapuri and AIIMS.

Currently, none of these stations have dedicated parking facilities, forcing commuters to rely solely on pick-and-drop arrangements.

Identified Parking Locations

Officials have identified multiple sites for immediate implementation. Parking will be developed under both entry and exit gates at Subhash Nagar Metro Station, and also at stations near Kendriya School, DB Mall, DRM Office and Alkapuri.

However, no final decision has been taken for MP Nagar, Rani Kamlapati and AIIMS stations. Authorities pointed out that alternative parking options already exist in these areas, including the large facility at Rani Kamlapati Railway Station, which is currently being used by some metro commuters.

Commuter Challenges Persist

The absence of parking has emerged as a major hurdle for metro adoption in Bhopal. Daily commuters have reported inconvenience, particularly those travelling from outer areas who depend on personal vehicles to reach metro stations.

Officials said the issue has been under review for the past two months, with coordination involving the police department to ensure feasibility and traffic management around proposed sites.

Other Budget Proposals

Apart from the Bhopal Metro parking proposal, the civic budget will include several infrastructure-focused initiatives. A major plan involves the disposal of legacy waste at the Adampur trenching ground, with an estimated outlay of ₹55.54 crore.

Additionally, a proposal to declare 145 unused municipal vehicles as scrap will be presented. Both initiatives have already been approved at the Mayor-in-Council level.

Focus on Urban Upgrade

Officials described the upcoming budget as part of a broader push to strengthen urban infrastructure and improve service delivery. With no final decision yet on tax hikes, following objections from public representatives last year, the administration is expected to prioritise civic amenities and public convenience.

The Bhopal Metro parking proposal is being seen as a crucial step in addressing last-mile connectivity challenges and boosting public transport usage in the city.

What Lies Ahead

The final decision on the Bhopal Metro parking proposal will be taken during the municipal council meeting on March 23. If approved, work on the identified sites is expected to begin in phases, subject to administrative clearances and budget allocation.

Urban planners believe the initiative could significantly improve commuter experience and support the long-term viability of the metro network, making it a key development in the Latest News Today and a major India News Update in urban mobility.
