Bhopal Metro to Be Inaugurated on December 20, Commercial Operations from December 21

The much-awaited Bhopal Metro will be formally inaugurated on the evening of December 20, with commercial passenger services commencing from December 21, officials confirmed on Thursday. In the initial phase, metro services will operate on the priority corridor between AIIMS and Subhash Nagar.

According to metro authorities, trains will run daily from 9 am to 7 pm, completing 17 trips per day. The fare for passengers has been fixed between ₹20 and ₹70, depending on the distance travelled. Officials clarified that no free rides or introductory discounts will be offered during the launch phase.

The inauguration ceremony will be held at Minto Hall and will be attended by Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, and other senior leaders. As part of the programme, the Union Minister and the Chief Minister will travel by metro from Subhash Nagar to AIIMS, followed by a press interaction. A recorded video message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also be released during the event.

Fare Structure

  • Up to 2 stations: ₹20

  • 3 to 4 stations: ₹30

  • 5 to 8 stations: ₹40

  • Full corridor: ₹70

During trial operations, metro trains have recorded speeds ranging from 30 to 80 kmph, with short sections touching 100–120 kmph, officials said.

Infrastructure Status

While the priority corridor has received approval from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), construction work is still underway at AIIMS, Alkapuri, and DRM Office stations.

Notably, none of the eight stations on the Orange Line will have parking facilities. Passengers will only be allowed pick-up and drop-off, as parking space has not been provided in the project design. Authorities said shops planned beneath stations will further restrict parking, and alternative arrangements are being explored to minimise inconvenience.

What Lies Ahead

After the start of commercial operations, focus will shift to the next phase of the Orange Line from Subhash Nagar to Karond and the Blue Line from Bhadbhada to Ratnagiri. The full AIIMS–Karond corridor spans 16.05 km, with work on the 6.22 km priority section having begun in 2018.

The first trial run of the Bhopal Metro took place on October 3, 2023, marking a major milestone in the city’s urban transport journey.
