Bhopal Tree Cutting Now a Jail Offence; Two Engineers Suspended Over CM Infra Negligence

In Bhopal, cutting trees without prior permission can now land citizens in jail, following directives from the National Green Tribunal (NGT). Municipal Commissioner Sanskriti Jain has taken personal charge of all tree-cutting approvals, revoking previously delegated powers of the Tree Officer.
Commissioner Jain recently reviewed urban greenery management and strongly warned that unauthorized tree felling or pruning will attract strict punitive action, including imprisonment. She emphasized that no tree or plant in the city should be pruned without official permission.
In a separate action, Commissioner Jain suspended two engineers for negligence in CM Infra road construction in Ward No. 83, Kolar Road. Manish Singh, Assistant Engineer (Mechanical) of Zone 18, and Harshdeep Soni, Sub-Engineer (Mechanical), were suspended immediately for substandard road work, including potholes and damaged surfaces, and for failing to provide satisfactory explanations.
Additionally, a show-cause notice has been issued to Executive Engineer Kolar S.K. Rajesh, and the Commissioner has instructed the Superintending Engineer to conduct a core-cut investigation on the road constructed under CM Infra to assess quality lapses.
The strict measures reflect the Municipal Corporation’s zero-tolerance approach toward environmental violations and substandard infrastructure projects, signaling stronger oversight and accountability in city governance.
