The death of BJP leader Roshni Shukla, initially reported as a road accident in Rewa district, has escalated into a suspected murder case after eyewitnesses alleged she was deliberately run over multiple times by SUVs. Seven days after the incident, Rewa police have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT), intensifying scrutiny amid mounting public outrage.
Roshni Shukla, a former assistant to Shahdol BJP MP Himadri Singh, was killed on the night of January 14 near Belwa Mod, around 50 km from Rewa. According to police records, she was returning home on foot after getting down from a bus when she was allegedly chased and crushed by two Bolero SUVs on a public road.
Eyewitnesses told investigators that Shukla was first struck by one vehicle and knocked to the ground. Moments later, a second SUV ran over her. The driver allegedly reversed and moved forward repeatedly over her body until she stopped breathing. Locals said the vehicle eventually overturned, trapping her underneath. It reportedly took nearly 45 minutes for villagers to lift the SUV and retrieve her body.
Family members have rejected the accident theory, alleging premeditated murder. Shukla’s brother, Prakash Shukla, said she had earlier expressed fear for her safety and had called him to pick her up shortly before the incident. “She said some people were after her. Before I could reach, she was killed,” he said.
Witnesses also claimed the vehicles had been roaming the area for several hours prior to the incident. One woman eyewitness described the scene as “the most brutal death” she had ever witnessed. Another local said Shukla was still breathing when they reached her, but had suffered catastrophic injuries.
Police officials said both accident and murder angles are being examined. Station House Officer Deepak Tiwari stated that the vehicles involved are yet to be identified and ownership details are being traced. Additional SP Sandeep Mishra confirmed that eyewitness statements are being recorded and forensic evidence collected.
The SIT was formed under the supervision of Rewa SP Shailendra Singh to ensure a thorough probe. BJP MP Himadri Singh visited the family after the incident, while political reactions and demands for accountability continue to grow.
As the investigation progresses, the case has raised serious questions about women’s safety, alleged harassment, and the possibility of targeted violence. Authorities say further action will depend on evidence gathered in the coming days.
