Bus Overturns in Barwani: 16 Injured After Driver Swerves to Save Cattle on Highway

A major road accident took place early Sunday morning on the Anjad–Thikri Highway in Barwani district, when a passenger bus overturned while trying to avoid hitting stray cattle.

 The incident occurred between Manwada and Talwada villages, leaving at least 16 passengers injured, including several women and children.

According to officials, the bus — belonging to Jai Mata Di Dawar Tour and Travels — was traveling from Bhopal to Barwani with over 50 passengers on board. Around 5:30 a.m., the driver suddenly applied brakes and lost control while trying to avoid a cow that appeared on the road, causing the bus to skid and overturn along the roadside.

Passengers Were Asleep When the Accident Occurred

Eyewitness Mohan Mandloi, a passenger from Nanpur, said,

“Most of us were asleep when the bus suddenly jolted and flipped over. The driver tried to save an animal, but the bus lost balance and toppled.”

The impact triggered chaos inside the vehicle, with frightened passengers shouting for help. Local villagers rushed to the site and helped rescue the injured from the wreckage before emergency services arrived.

Rescue and Relief Operations

Police from Anjad police station and medical teams from the Health Department quickly reached the scene.

  • 11 seriously injured passengers were taken to Barwani District Hospital,

  • While five others received first aid at the Anjad Community Health Centre.

Emergency medical care began immediately upon their arrival, according to Dr. Anita Singare, Civil Surgeon at Barwani Hospital.

Officials Visit Hospital; Driver Missing

Top district officials, including Additional Collector K.K. Malviya, Additional SP Dheeraj Babbar, Tehsildar Hitendra Bhavsar, Traffic In-Charge Vinod Baghel, CMHO Dr. Surekha Jamre, and Dr. Anita Singare, visited the hospital to assess the condition of the injured.

Thikri Police Station In-Charge Nathusingh Randha confirmed that the accident occurred around 5:30 a.m., and the driver fled the scene soon after the mishap. Efforts are underway to trace him.

Traffic on the highway was briefly disrupted due to the overturned bus but was later restored after police cleared the site.
