Class 12 Student Killed in Bhopal Hit-and-Run; Crowd Chases Down Fortuner Driver Linked to Local Builder

A Class 12 student was killed on Wednesday afternoon in a hit-and-run incident near the Polytechnic petrol pump in Bhopal, triggering public outrage after the driver of a Fortuner SUV attempted to flee the spot. The victim, identified as 18-year-old Atif, died instantly after the speeding vehicle ran over him.

According to police, Atif, a resident of Ginnouri in the Taliya police station area, had stepped out on his scooter to buy medicines for his ailing father. After making the purchase, he was heading back when the Fortuner approached from behind at high speed and struck his scooter. Eyewitnesses said the impact threw him to the ground, and as the driver tried to escape, the SUV ran over the teenager’s head.

The crowd present at the site began pursuing the vehicle, chasing it for nearly two kilometres before stopping it near the Ret Ghat outpost. Locals then handed the driver over to police, a moment captured in videos circulating on social media. However, police have yet to issue a formal statement confirming his arrest.

Investigators said the SUV is registered in the name of K.L. Mulani, a well-known builder and owner of Bhopal Builders. The youth behind the wheel is reportedly Mulani’s son, who has been detained for questioning. Officers have seized the vehicle and moved it to the Shyamala Hills police station.

TI Bhupendra Sindhu said a marg (inquest) has been registered and further action will follow the completion of initial inquiries. An FIR is expected after police verify eyewitness statements, video evidence and forensic details.

The incident has sparked anger in the area, with residents demanding swift action and strict charges against the accused. Police said they are examining whether rash driving, culpable homicide or additional sections will be invoked once the investigation progresses.
