Clean Chit for Accused in MP’s First Digital Arrest Case

The Gwalior High Court has granted a clean chit to 10 accused in MP’s inaugural digital arrest fraud case involving ₹51 lakh. A retired teacher had allegedly been intimidated into transferring the amount after being falsely “digitally arrested” by scammers posing as Mumbai police. Following recovery of the funds and her request to drop the case—citing age and inability to pursue further legal action.

The accused have got a clean chit in Madhya Pradesh's first digital arrest case. A case of digital arrest fraud of Rs 51 lakh came to light in Gwalior, the state. The High Court has given a clean chit to all the accused of fraud. All the accused have been acquitted due to a settlement with the victim.

In fact, retired Gwalior teacher Asha Bhatnagar was cheated. 72-year-old Asha was cheated of Rs 51 lakh in March 2024. Asha Bhatnagar had lodged an FIR at the Crime Branch police station. Mir Mudassar, a resident of Srinagar, and others were arrested in the fraud case. The teacher had reached a settlement when the accused returned the money.

On the basis of the settlement, the FIR registered at the police station has been canceled. After the FIR was canceled, a petition was filed in the High Court. The High Court has acquitted all the accused of fraud. This is probably the first case of digital arrest in the state.
