Contaminated Water Claims Life of Woman in Chhindwara: Family Protests at Hospital
Chhindwara, MP
A 36-year-old woman from Rajoula village in Chhindwara succumbed to illness caused by contaminated drinking water, sparking outrage among her family and villagers.
The woman, identified as Durga Chandravanshi, was brought to the district hospital on Saturday evening after falling seriously ill. Despite treatment, she passed away early Sunday morning.
Furious relatives accused the hospital staff of negligence and staged a protest at the hospital entrance, placing her body outside to demand accountability. Rajoula village has been grappling with water contamination issues, leaving over 400 residents sick. In response, the district collector had earlier set up a temporary medical facility in the village’s panchayat building to treat the affected villagers.
According to Durga’s family, hospital staff demanded a fee of ₹200 for treatment but failed to provide proper care. Family members claimed they repeatedly informed the staff about the severity of her condition and the ongoing water crisis in the village, yet no adequate medical attention was provided.
Police arrived at the hospital to manage the protest, and the chief civil surgeon, Dr. Ravi Tandekar, also visited the site. Dr. Tandekar stated that an official inquiry will be conducted once a formal complaint is received. Meanwhile, villagers demand justice for Durga and strict action against negligent hospital employees.
The incident highlights the urgent need for safe drinking water and accountability in healthcare services, especially in rural areas vulnerable to waterborne illnesses.
