Controversy Erupts Over Digvijaya Singh’s Aide After Social Media Remarks on Upper-Caste Youth

A political controversy has erupted in Guna district after a social media post by Vikram Tomar, a representative of Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh, drew sharp criticism for its remarks on the upper-caste community. Tomar’s comments, targeting youth from the ‘Swarn Samaj’, have triggered backlash and renewed scrutiny of his public conduct.
The controversy stems from a post shared by Tomar on social media earlier this week, in which he claimed that youth belonging to the upper-caste community were largely disengaged from social change and reform. In the post, he wrote that while only a handful respond to calls for “revolutionary work,” thousands readily turn up for community feasts, a remark that many have described as offensive and divisive.
In the same post, Tomar accused upper-caste youth of being preoccupied with IPL betting, cricket discussions, Instagram reels and selfies with political leaders. He further alleged that young people across party lines—whether aligned with the Congress or the BJP—were more focused on appeasing leaders and their families than engaging in meaningful public action.
Expressing concern about the future, Tomar warned that such behaviour would eventually harm the youth themselves. He claimed that the leaders whom they admire today would be responsible for their downfall if they fail to think independently. He concluded the post with a personal note, stating that for him, God remains supreme.
The remarks quickly circulated on social media platforms, drawing criticism from various quarters. Several users accused Tomar of making sweeping generalisations and using language that could deepen social divisions. While no formal complaint has been reported so far, political observers say the post has embarrassed the Congress locally, given Tomar’s association with senior leader Digvijaya Singh.
Vikram Tomar currently serves as Digvijaya Singh’s representative in Madhya Pradesh and is also the district president of the Swarn Army. He has remained in the public eye in the past due to his statements and political activities. In the 2022 municipal elections, Tomar contested for the post of councillor on a Congress ticket but was defeated.
Questions regarding his role and identity have also surfaced earlier. Recently, during the submission of a memorandum seeking action in a Manusmriti burning case in Khaniyadhana, Tomar did not identify himself as a Member of Parliament’s representative. However, days later, in a social media post about listening to public grievances in a ward, he described himself as a Rajya Sabha MP’s representative, leading to criticism over inconsistency.
So far, there has been no official response from Digvijaya Singh or the Congress party on Tomar’s latest remarks. Political analysts say the episode underscores the growing impact of social media statements on political credibility and internal party discipline.
