Cowshed Used as Cover for Illegal Firecracker Factory in Indore; 100 kg Gunpowder Seized, Accused Arrested

In a major crackdown to prevent accidents and ensure public safety, the Indore district administration on Wednesday busted an illegal firecracker manufacturing unit operating under the guise of a cowshed at a farmhouse in Hatod tehsil. Nearly 100 kilograms of illegally stored gunpowder was seized during the operation, officials said.

The joint action was carried out by teams from the revenue department and local police as part of a district-wide drive against unauthorised manufacture, storage and sale of fireworks. The farmhouse, spread over nearly 10,000 square feet, was found to be functioning as an unlicensed unit producing sutli bombs for the past 15 days.

Officials said the operators attempted to evade detection by disguising the factory as an agricultural setup. A cowshed had been constructed on the premises and eight cows were kept there to project routine farming activity, while firecracker production was underway inside. The illegal godown and shed were demolished on the spot, and the electricity connection was disconnected to prevent further use.

An FIR has been registered against Rahul Agrawal, who allegedly leased the agricultural land in March 2025 and was running the unit. Three workers — Vijay Singh, Sagar Prajapat and Ranjeet Singh Thakur — were taken into custody from the site. Two vehicles loaded with finished sutli bombs and raw materials were also seized.

Simultaneous raids were conducted at multiple locations across Indore, leading to the sealing of several illegal factories, godowns and shops, and the demolition of unauthorised structures. Additional arrests were made in related cases.

In a separate action, the administration sealed the Sana Fire Works unit at Rajdhara village in Bicholi Hapsi after inspectors found serious safety violations, including sutli bombs being dried in open and hazardous conditions.

Collector Shivam Verma said the administration would adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards illegal and unsafe activities involving explosives. “Any violation that endangers public life will invite strict action. Such enforcement drives will continue across the district,” he said.
