Two separate road accidents in Madhya Pradesh claimed eight lives late Thursday, wiping out two families in heartbreaking collisions involving motorcycles and trucks.
In Katni district, a pickup truck loaded with tomatoes slammed into a motorcycle around 9 pm near Hirapur and Badgaon in the Reethi police area. The violent impact killed three riders instantly and left a fourth dying shortly after at a local health center.
The victims — Anu Basor, 32; his two-and-a-half-year-old daughter Bharti; Vinod Basor, 30; and Premlal Basor, 32 — were daily wage laborers from Bagwar village in neighboring Panna district. They were heading home after visiting relatives in Barji village. Vinod was Anu's brother-in-law; Premlal was his brother.
The pickup driver fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle. Police arrived quickly, seized the crushed motorcycle, and launched a manhunt. Bodies were sent for autopsy. Hours earlier, around 7:30 pm in Seoni's Kurai area, another family perished on the Jabalpur-Nagpur National Highway near Riddi Tek. Their motorcycle rammed into a parked truck, killing all four on the spot.
Parmanand Barkade, 45, his wife Geeta, 38, daughter Mahi, 8, and son Deepanshu, 4, lived in Khawasa Tola village. They were en route to relatives in Dargadha for New Year celebrations on bike number MP 22 ZC 2632. Barghat SDOP Lalit Gathre said the truck had broken down with an engine failure and warning markers placed roadside. Darkness and high speed likely prevented the rider from spotting it in time.
Kurai police responded immediately and forwarded the bodies for post-mortem, scheduled for Friday. These crashes underscore persistent road safety woes in the state, especially on highways plagued by poor lighting, overloaded vehicles, and erratic parking. Authorities continue investigations in both cases, with no arrests reported yet.
