Gwalior Lawyer Dies by Suicide After Relationship Dispute; Bhagat Singh’s Jail Diary Found Open in Room

A lawyer practising at the Madhya Pradesh High Court died by suicide in Gwalior, with police indicating that emotional distress following a dispute with his fiancée may have driven him to take the extreme step. Investigators found a copy of Bhagat Singh’s Jail Diary open near his bed, suggesting he had been reading it shortly before his death.

The deceased has been identified as Mrityunjay Singh Chauhan, a resident of Gwalior. Police said Chauhan was found hanging at his home on Monday. A panel of doctors conducted the post-mortem examination on Tuesday, after which the body was handed over to the family. The case is being investigated by the Gola Ka Mandir police.

According to family members, Chauhan was engaged to a woman sub-inspector posted in Morena, and the two were planning to marry on December 30. They had been in a relationship for nearly five years. On December 12, Chauhan reportedly travelled to Morena to surprise her at her official quarters near the Kotwali police station.

The family alleged that Chauhan found his fiancée with a constable at her residence, leading to a heated argument that escalated into a physical altercation. His mother, Shivkumari, claimed that Chauhan later approached the police with a complaint regarding the incident, but no action was taken.

Police sources said a written application addressed to the Morena Civil Lines police station was recovered from Chauhan’s room, though it is not clear whether the complaint was formally registered. Authorities have not confirmed reports of any counter-action taken against Chauhan following the incident.

Investigators also recovered Bhagat Singh’s Jail Diary from Chauhan’s bedroom. The book was reportedly open at a section reflecting on courage and resolve before execution, and was found within arm’s reach of the bed.

In an unusual gesture, the family took Chauhan’s body to Gwalior Central Jail, where his elder brother paid last respects. The final rites were later performed in Varanasi. Police said all aspects of the case are under examination.
