Evicted couple blocks Ujjain–Dewas highway with children, traffic disrupted for 45 minutes

A couple evicted from the premises of a private hospital staged a protest on the Ujjain–Dewas Highway on Thursday, blocking traffic by placing their household belongings on the road and sitting there with their children. The protest caused long traffic jams on both sides of the highway, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded for nearly 45 minutes.
The protest was triggered after Ramdiyal Prajapat, a resident of Khategaon who is undergoing treatment for kidney failure, was allegedly evicted along with his family from Amaltas Hospital in Dewas. According to the family, they had been living in a temporary hut within the hospital premises for the past two years while Ramdiyal received medical treatment.
Ramdiyal alleged that hospital authorities had repeatedly asked him to vacate the premises. He claimed that an argument broke out with hospital staff on Wednesday, following which the family was forcibly evicted later that night. He further alleged that their belongings were thrown out of the hospital premises without prior notice.
Angered by the eviction, Ramdiyal, his wife Dwarika and their children reached the Ujjain–Dewas Highway near Singawada village early Thursday morning. The family placed household items, including bedding and utensils, on the road and began a sit-in protest, bringing vehicular movement to a halt.
Ramdiyal also alleged that hospital staff assaulted his wife during the eviction process. He claimed that a complaint had earlier been submitted to the local police regarding the issue, but no action was taken against the hospital management. Police officials said they are aware of the allegations and are gathering information from both sides.
The blockade led to a massive traffic jam, affecting commuters, public transport vehicles and goods carriers. Traffic police attempted to persuade the family to clear the road, but the protest continued until senior district officials intervened.
Ujjain Collector Roshan Kumar Singh arrived at the spot, listened to the family’s grievances and assured them that the matter would be examined and appropriate action would be taken after an inquiry. Following the assurance, the couple removed their belongings from the road and lifted the blockade, allowing traffic to resume.
District officials later said that the situation was brought under control peacefully and no injuries were reported during the protest. Authorities have stated that the allegations regarding eviction and assault will be verified, and further action will depend on the findings of the inquiry.
The incident has once again highlighted issues related to patient accommodation, hospital responsibility and grievance redressal mechanisms, particularly for economically vulnerable families dependent on long-term medical care.
