In a tragic incident that has shocked Tendukheda town in Madhya Pradesh’s Damoh district, the bodies of a husband, wife and their one-and-a-half-year-old daughter were found hanging inside their house on Thursday morning. Police said the door had to be broken open to retrieve the bodies. No suicide note was found at the scene.
The deceased have been identified as Manish Kewat (30), his wife Dasoda Kewat, and their infant daughter Arohi. The family lived in Ward No. 1 of Tendukheda. Manish earned a living as a daily-wage labourer and was the sole breadwinner of the household, according to local residents.
The incident came to light after neighbours noticed that the house remained locked and there was no movement inside since early morning. Concerned residents alerted the family and the police. When repeated knocks went unanswered, relatives arrived and forced the door open, only to find all three bodies hanging inside the room.
Police officials reached the spot soon after receiving information and secured the premises. The bodies were brought down and sent for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause and sequence of deaths. A forensic team also inspected the house as part of standard procedure.
As news of the incident spread, a large crowd gathered outside the house, and the area remained tense for several hours. Family members were seen inconsolable, struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss. Dasoda’s sister, who reached the house after being informed, told police that she had no prior knowledge of any dispute or distress within the family.
Tendukheda police station in-charge Ravindra Bagri said an investigation has been initiated from all possible angles. “The bodies have been sent for post-mortem. A case has been registered, and we are trying to ascertain the reasons behind the incident. No suicide note has been recovered so far,” he said.
Police are questioning relatives, neighbours and acquaintances to understand whether the family was under any financial, social or personal stress. Officials said post-mortem reports and call detail records, if required, will play a key role in establishing the circumstances leading up to the deaths.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the vulnerability of economically weaker families and the importance of early identification of mental health distress. Authorities said further action will be taken once medical and forensic reports are received.
