Farmers Stage Jal Satyagraha in River Over Crop Insurance Claim

Angry over not receiving their crop insurance claims, farmers entered the river and performed Jal Satyagraha, intensifying their protest against the authorities.

The crop insurance scheme is not a source of hope for farmers but is causing resentment. Many farmers received insurance claims less than their premium amount. Some were paid Rs 100 and some were paid Rs 1100. Farmers are calling it a blatant fraud. In this episode, farmers of Tilakhedi, Mungawali Chhoti, Lasudiya Khas and Kothari villages of Sehore district protested by doing Jal Satyagraha. They stood in the river shouting slogans while holding the damaged soybean crop in their hands. Farmers say that the movement will continue until they get full compensation.

Continuous destruction for five years

Farmer social worker MS Mewada says that for the last five years, soybean and wheat crops are being continuously destroyed by natural disasters. Sometimes excessive rain, sometimes drought and sometimes hailstorms have made the farmers poor, but till now the administration has not taken any concrete steps.

Unique protests and growing resentment

Farmers have repeatedly expressed their pain through unique movements. Some climbed trees and rang bells, some rang rattles. Now women registered their protest by taking out rallies and farmers started water satyagraha in rivers. Farmers are warning that this movement will be spread from village to village.

Government's own claims
The state government is claiming to give insurance money to lakhs of farmers. But farmers are asking that when only Rs 500 is given for three hectares of crop, then what kind of compensation is this? Farmers clearly say that they will not back down now and the struggle will continue until they get their due rights.
