Five Killed, 12 Injured as Tractor-Trolley Collides with Loading Vehicle in Bhopal

Five members of a family lost their lives and at least 12 others were injured in a late-night road accident in Bhopal’s Berasia area after a tractor-trolley collided head-on with a loading vehicle. The incident occurred around 9.30 pm on Wednesday when the family was travelling to Narmadapuram for a holy dip on the occasion of Makar Sankranti.

According to police, the victims were among 15 members of the same family from Sironj town who were travelling in the loading vehicle. The collision took place near Thakur Lal Singh School under the Berasia police station limits. The impact was severe, leaving the loading vehicle extensively damaged and trapping several passengers inside.

Berasia police station in-charge Virendra Sen said five people died on the spot, while nine family members sustained injuries. Three occupants of the tractor-trolley were also injured in the crash. All injured persons were rushed to Berasia Government Hospital, where some are reported to be in serious condition.

The deceased have been identified as Lakshmibai Ahirwar, Babli Bai, Hari Bai, Deepak and Mukesh. Those injured include Suraj, Vinita, Punit, Monika, Mahak, Noori Bai, Lallu, Pradeep and Jyoti, among others. Hospital authorities confirmed that emergency medical teams were mobilised immediately after the accident.

Senior district officials, including Berasia SDM Ashutosh Sharma, Additional Superintendent of Police Neeraj Chaurasia and local MLA Vishnu Khatri, reached the hospital to review treatment arrangements. Officials instructed medical staff to ensure proper and uninterrupted care for the injured.

Preliminary investigation suggests that excessive speed may have been a contributing factor. “Initial findings indicate that high speed led to the collision, but the exact cause will be determined after a detailed investigation,” SDM Sharma said. Police have registered a case and are examining vehicle conditions, driver statements and road circumstances.

The tragedy has cast a shadow over Sankranti celebrations in the region, as families traditionally travel to riverside towns for ritual bathing on the festival. Local residents have once again raised concerns over road safety on rural and semi-urban stretches, particularly during festive periods when traffic volume increases.

Authorities have appealed to motorists to exercise caution, adhere to speed limits and avoid overcrowding vehicles. Further action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation, officials said.
