Four Police Personnel Killed as High-Speed Truck Hits BDDS Vehicle on NH-44

Four police personnel were killed and one critically injured on Wednesday morning when a speeding container truck collided head-on with a Bomb Disposal and Dog Squad (BDDS) vehicle on National Highway-44 near Bandri in Sagar district. The impact crushed the police van, trapping all occupants inside.

The accident occurred around Jhinjhani Valley as the BDDS team from Morena was returning from duty in Balaghat. Their vehicle, bearing registration MP 03 A 4883, was approaching a curve when the container veered into their path, resulting in a violent collision. The front cabin of the police vehicle was flattened under the force.

Local police and emergency responders reached the spot minutes later. With the van’s frame severely deformed, rescuers used a JCB machine to cut the structure and pull out the bodies. Panchnama proceedings were completed on-site before the victims were taken to Bandri Hospital.

The deceased have been identified as Pradhyuman Dixit and Aman Kaurav, both BDDS jawans from Morena; driver Parmlal Tomar, also from Morena; and dog master Vinod Sharma from Bhind. Constable Rajiv Chauhan of Morena survived with critical injuries and is undergoing treatment.

Senior officials said preliminary findings suggest excessive speed on the part of the container driver, though a detailed mechanical and forensic examination is underway. Police have initiated a case and are tracing the truck driver, who reportedly fled after the crash.

The BDDS unit had been deployed in Balaghat for an assignment and was returning to base when the accident occurred. Authorities said the incident underscores the dangers faced by specialised police teams who frequently travel long distances for field duties.

The state police headquarters has expressed condolences and assured support for the families of the deceased. Further investigation will determine liability and whether lapses in highway traffic regulation contributed to the fatal collision.
