A gas cylinder exploded during a late‑night wedding reception at a city hotel on Monday, triggering a large fire that sent flames soaring up to 50 feet and forced guests to flee in panic, officials and eyewitnesses said.
The incident occurred at around 10 p.m. at Hotel Play and Resort in the Bhauri area, where a wedding reception was underway. According to eyewitness accounts, a loud blast — believed to have begun with an electrical short circuit — ignited a gas cylinder stored on the premises, sparking a fierce blaze that was visible for several kilometres.
Flames quickly engulfed nearby materials, causing extensive damage to the venue and goods valued at several lakhs of rupees, local authorities said. Despite the severity of the fire, no loss of life or serious injury has been reported.
“People were running in all directions to save themselves as the fire spread,” an attendee who wished to remain anonymous told reporters. “It was only by luck that the area where the cylinder was stored was not crowded at the time.”
Firefighters from Gandhinagar, Bairagarh and Fatehgarh fire stations were deployed to the scene shortly after the explosion was reported. The firefighting operation continued well past midnight, and fire tenders remained on site into the early hours of Tuesday as smoke continued to rise from the debris.
City police have cordoned off the affected section of the hotel as teams work to determine the exact sequence of events leading up to the explosion. Early assessments suggest that a short circuit may have triggered the initial spark that ignited the cylinder, but investigators say a thorough probe is underway.
Emergency responders rushed to clear charred materials with the help of heavy machinery, including a JCB, to ensure no hidden embers could reignite and to assess structural damage.
No official statement has yet been issued by the hotel’s management, but police sources indicated that the venue was operating with all standard permits and approvals. Authorities stressed that prompt alerting of emergency services and the location of the blast outside main guest areas played a key role in avoiding fatalities.
As the investigation progresses, city officials have said they will review safety compliance protocols at wedding venues and banquet halls across Bhopal to prevent similar incidents in the future.
