As per the information, all five youths were residents of Delhi and had come to Ujjain in their Ertiga car (DL 13-C-7474). After attending the Bhasma Aarti and visiting the Kal Bhairav Temple on Monday morning, they set the return route to Delhi using Google Maps. Following the app's directions, they diverted from the Kota Highway onto a village road, leading to the tragic accident.
According to eyewitnesses, the car first hit a police barricade and then lost control, crashing into a tree on the roadside. Aryan Lohia died on the spot, while Ujjwal Gupta, Arjun Vashisth, Nachiket, and Mridul Arya sustained serious injuries. With the help of local villagers, the injured were first taken to the Patan Health Center and then referred to Ujjain.
Police said the youths belonged to reputed families in Delhi. Some are students, and others have family members in high positions. The group had recently also traveled to Udaipur.
Injured youth Ujjwal Gupta said, “We followed Google Maps and left the highway based on its directions. Suddenly there was a jolt, and next thing I remember, I woke up in the hospital.”
Police have registered a case and started an investigation. Preliminary findings suggest high speed and wrong route selection as the main causes of the accident.
This incident once again raises serious questions about blindly relying on digital navigation. In the past too, several fatal accidents have occurred due to misleading directions from Google Maps.
