Gwalior Constable Shot During Morena Raid as Mob Attacks Arrest Team; Local Police Say They Were Not Alerted

A police team from Gwalior’s Maharajpura station came under violent attack in Morena on Wednesday during an operation to arrest an accused in an attempted murder case. A constable suffered a gunshot wound to his leg when a crowd assaulted the plainclothes officers in Janakpur village.

The injured constable, Anil Tomar, was initially taken to Morena District Hospital and later shifted to Apollo Hospital in Gwalior, where his condition is reported to be stable.

The incident has raised questions over procedural lapses after Morena police stated they were not informed about the raid. Gwalior SSP Dharamveer Singh has since spoken to Morena SP Sameer Saurabh regarding the assault.

Police officials said the team had travelled to Janakpur to arrest Haddoo Gurjar, wanted in a November 2 attempt-to-murder case. The officers had detained Gurjar and were placing him inside their vehicle when several villagers gathered. Within moments, some individuals allegedly attacked the officers, and one among them fired a shot, hitting Tomar.

Sources said five personnel had gone to the village in civil dress to avoid alerting the accused. However, the commotion during the arrest drew the attention of locals, triggering the mob assault.

The case against Haddoo Gurjar stems from a complaint filed by Ranveer Singh Gurjar of Kargawan village. According to the FIR, his nephew Shyam was found critically injured near Virasat Hotel on November 2 and alleged that Haddoo, along with several associates, assaulted him over an old rivalry. Shyam had suffered serious head injuries and was admitted to hospital in critical condition.

Morena SP Sameer Saurabh confirmed that his department received information only after the violence erupted. “We have been told that a Gwalior Police team came to arrest an accused and was attacked. One jawan has been shot. No prior information was shared with us. The matter is under investigation,” he said.

Police teams from both districts are now coordinating to trace those involved in the attack and to determine why the raid proceeded without local intimation.
