Gwalior Crash: Grandma Dies Saving Grandson on His Birthday

A grandmother from Meerut shielded her grandson with her body and died as a speeding Scorpio rammed an auto in Gwalior at 3 AM, killing five family members returning from a birthday celebration.

In one of the most heartbreaking road accident stories to emerge from Madhya Pradesh in recent memory, a grandmother from Meerut gave her life to save her infant grandson in a devastating crash that claimed five lives in Gwalior in the early hours of Friday morning. The family had been celebrating the little boy's birthday just hours before the tragedy struck — and videos of them dancing and laughing together, recorded that same evening, began circulating widely after the news of the accident broke.

A Birthday That Turned Into a Funeral

Thursday had been a day of pure joy for the family. It was the birthday of Arav, the young son of Shubham and Shagun. The family had celebrated the occasion together — cutting cake, dancing, filming videos — the kind of ordinary, precious moments that families capture without ever imagining they could be the last. After the birthday celebration, the family visited a temple, singing devotional songs dedicated to the Goddess — Mata ke geet — as they made their way home in an auto-rickshaw in the dead of night.

It was around 3 AM when everything changed in a matter of seconds.

Scorpio at 100 KMPH Rams Auto from Behind

As the auto-rickshaw carried the family through Gwalior's near-empty early morning roads, a speeding Scorpio came up from behind and struck it with tremendous force. According to eyewitness accounts and initial police reports, the Scorpio was travelling at approximately 100 kilometres per hour at the time of impact. The force of the collision was so severe that the auto was thrown forward into a roadside tree, crumpling almost entirely on impact.

The auto-rickshaw — a small, structurally fragile vehicle offering virtually no protection at that speed — stood no chance against the impact. It was completely destroyed.

Grandmother Wraps Herself Around Grandson

At the moment of impact, little Arav was sitting in the lap of his maternal grandmother, Preeti Kashyap, who had travelled all the way from Meerut specifically to be part of her grandson's birthday celebration. In the fraction of a second between the collision and the crash, Preeti pulled Arav close to her chest and curled her body around him — shielding him instinctively, the way only a grandmother can.

Arav survived.

Preeti Kashyap did not.

She died at the scene, along with four other members of the family. Four more were left injured. In her final moment, she made the most profound choice a human being can make — and she made it without hesitation.

Five Dead, Four Injured

The death toll from the accident stands at five, all of whom were passengers in the auto-rickshaw. The four injured are currently receiving treatment, and their condition is being monitored by medical authorities. Police have registered a case and are investigating the identity and circumstances of the Scorpio driver, whose vehicle caused the catastrophic collision.

The scale of loss that descended on this single family in the space of a few seconds is almost incomprehensible. In less than a day, the same household went from birthday celebrations to arrangements for five funerals.

The Videos That Broke Hearts Across India

What has made this tragedy resonate so deeply across social media and news platforms is the footage that emerged alongside the accident reports. In one video, Preeti Kashyap — the grandmother who would be dead within hours — is seen dancing with visible joy at her grandson's birthday party. She is laughing, carefree, fully present in the moment. Arav is seen nearby, oblivious to everything except the happiness surrounding him.

These videos, recorded just hours before the crash, have been widely shared and have left viewers across the country shaken. The contrast between the warmth of those birthday frames and the devastation that followed has struck a chord that cold accident statistics rarely can.

Road Safety Questions Back in Focus

This accident adds another grim chapter to Gwalior's — and Madhya Pradesh's — record on road safety. A speeding private vehicle striking a slow-moving, unprotected auto-rickshaw at 100 kilometres per hour in the early hours of the morning is not an unpredictable event — it is a preventable one. Questions are once again being raised about late-night speed enforcement, the vulnerability of auto-rickshaw passengers, and the consequences — or lack thereof — for reckless driving on urban roads.

Arav will grow up without his grandmother. He will, someday, perhaps watch the video of her dancing at his birthday — the last birthday she ever attended. And somewhere in that footage, in the warmth of her smile and the way she held him, will be the fullest possible expression of what it means to love someone.
