A 26-year-old engineer, facing allegations under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, died by suicide after allegedly consuming poison in Gwalior’s Gola Ka Mandir area, police said on Saturday. The incident has triggered serious allegations by the deceased’s family, who claim he was being blackmailed for money in connection with the case.
The deceased, identified as Luvjeet Singh Rana, was found in critical condition at a house in Purushottam Vihar Colony, where he had been staying with relatives. He was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Police have sent the body for post-mortem and initiated an investigation.
Luvjeet had a POCSO case registered against him in Dabra earlier this year, involving a girl aged nearly three years. According to the FIR, the alleged incident took place on April 22 when Luvjeet and one of his friends took the child for a car ride. The child later complained to her mother, and medical examination reportedly found injuries, following which the case was registered.
The family of the deceased has alleged that the complaint was false and was followed by monetary demands. Luvjeet’s uncle, Vipin Rana, claimed that the child’s mother and her lawyer demanded ₹60 lakh to “settle” the matter. “We paid ₹30 lakh, but the pressure for the remaining amount continued. Luvjeet slipped into depression and felt trapped,” he alleged.
Family members said the case had severe personal and professional consequences for Luvjeet. He lost his job in Gurugram after the case was registered and had withdrawn socially in recent months. On Friday night, he allegedly consumed poison. His condition was noticed the next morning.
Police said all aspects, including the family’s allegations, will be examined. “The matter is under investigation. Statements are being recorded, and further action will depend on the evidence,” said SI Tularam Kushwah of Gola Ka Mandir police station.
Luvjeet, a former school topper from Dabra and an engineering graduate from Indore, had been working with a multinational firm before the case. Authorities said both the suicide and the allegations of extortion will be probed independently.
