CCTV footage that surfaced later captured the sequence in chilling detail. The auto moved at normal speed when the Scorpio, bearing registration MP21 ZE-5911, approached from behind at high velocity. It struck the auto forcefully from the left rear, causing the lighter vehicle to swerve violently and slam into a tree. The force of the crash was evident from the shattered windshield and deployed airbags on the SUV.

Five people died on the spot or shortly after. The deceased included Indrajeet Shakya alias Pappu (55), his wife Leela Shakya (52), Shubham Shakya (30), his wife Shagun Shakya, and Preeti Kashyap (60). Four others sustained serious injuries, including two young children—Aarav (6) and Priyansh (5)—along with Shubham's sister Preeti (20) and the auto-rickshaw driver Rajesh Kumar (28). The injured were rushed to the trauma centre for treatment.

DIAL 112 personnel acted promptly. Constable Brijmohan, stationed nearby, spotted the Scorpio fleeing towards Akashvani after the hit-and-run. He alerted his team, which gave chase and apprehended the vehicle in the Govindpuri area within about 29 minutes. Another motorist who witnessed the incident confirmed the same Scorpio had rammed the auto at Parshuram Chauraha.

The driver, identified as Aman Sharma (26), a resident of Chanakya Puri in Gwalior, was found intoxicated during preliminary checks.
