Water supply in Gwalior has been severely disrupted following a major leak in the city’s primary pumping pipeline near Indraprastha Garden, officials confirmed on Tuesday. The breakdown comes amid rising temperatures, intensifying concerns over drinking water availability.

The affected pipeline, with a diameter of 350 mm, connects Gole Ka Mandir to Deendayal Nagar and plays a critical role in distributing water across several densely populated localities.

Supply Disruption Details

According to municipal authorities, the leak has impacted water flow from the Jalalpur Water Treatment Plant, which has a capacity of 160 MLD. As a result, supply to multiple key areas, including Deendayal Nagar, Murar, Thatipur, Sharda Vihar Colony, and Scindia Nagar, will remain interrupted.

Officials indicated that nearly 33 overhead water tanks will not be filled as per schedule, affecting an estimated two lakh residents.

Repair Work Scheduled

Assistant Engineer Hemant Sharma from the Gwalior Municipal Corporation stated that repair work is scheduled for Wednesday. During this period, water supply will remain temporarily suspended to facilitate urgent restoration.

“The leakage repair will be taken up on priority. Efforts are being made to complete the work within the stipulated time frame,” Sharma said, adding that supply disruption is expected to continue through April 16.

Advisory for Residents

The municipal corporation has issued a public advisory urging residents in affected areas to store adequate water in advance. Citizens were advised on April 15 itself to prepare for a day-long disruption to avoid inconvenience.

Officials also appealed for judicious use of stored water, especially considering the ongoing heat conditions.

Residents across affected neighbourhoods have expressed concern over the sudden disruption, particularly as water demand surges during peak summer. Many households depend on a fixed schedule for daily supply, making even short-term interruptions difficult to manage.

Local residents noted that such breakdowns, though occasional, tend to have a cascading impact on routine activities, including cooking, sanitation, and small businesses.

Officials have assured that the repair work will be completed on priority and that efforts are underway to restore normal supply by April 17. Tanker services may be deployed in critically affected pockets if required, though no formal announcement has been made yet.
