Gwalior Woman Mutilated in Domestic Assault; Five-Year-Old Daughter Witnesses Attack

A 28-year-old woman in Gwalior suffered severe injuries after her husband allegedly cut her nose with a pair of scissors during a violent domestic dispute on Saturday. The attack, which took place in Maharajpura near Bharat Market, was witnessed by the couple’s five-year-old daughter. The victim, Poonam, is undergoing treatment at the Trauma Centre of JAH Hospital.

According to police, the incident occurred when Dharmendra Tomar, reportedly intoxicated, dragged his wife into their home and assaulted her. Officers said he pressed her to the floor and then used scissors to mutilate her before fleeing the spot. The couple’s young daughter, Anushka, immediately ran to her aunt’s house nearby, after which relatives rushed Poonam to the hospital.

Speaking to reporters, the child described repeated episodes of violence in the household. She said her father frequently returned home drunk and assaulted her mother. “He hits Mummy all the time. I hide when he comes so he doesn’t hurt me,” she told journalists, adding that the latest attack was not an isolated incident.

Hospital staff informed police soon after Poonam was admitted. A team from Maharajpura police station recorded her statement on Sunday. A case has been registered against Tomar under relevant sections of the IPC, including charges related to domestic violence and grievous assault. Police officials said a search is underway to apprehend the accused, who remains absconding.

Neighbours and relatives told authorities that the family had been grappling with domestic disputes for months, with several incidents allegedly fueled by the husband’s alcohol addiction. The child, they said, often sought shelter with relatives during violent episodes.

Doctors stated that Poonam is stable but will require extended medical and psychological care. The case has once again highlighted concerns over recurring domestic violence in the region and the long-term trauma inflicted on children who witness such acts. Police said further action will follow once the accused is arrested and questioned.
