High Court seeks CCTV footage, replies from top officers in Rewa police excess case

The Jabalpur High Court has taken a strict view of serious allegations of abuse of power against the station house officer of Sagara police station in Rewa district, directing senior police officials to submit their responses and ordering the preservation and production of CCTV footage from the police station.

Hearing a petition filed by a resident of Majhiyari village in Sirmour tehsil, the court sought explanations from the Director General of Police, the Inspector General of Police, Rewa Zone, and the district Superintendent of Police. The matter pertains to alleged illegal detention, misuse of authority and forcible closure of a complaint lodged on the Chief Minister’s Helpline.

According to the petition, Rajesh Shukla has been embroiled in a land dispute with his uncle. The Commissioner Court had earlier ordered both parties to maintain status quo on the disputed land. Despite the order, Shukla alleged that his uncle harvested a standing paddy crop with the assistance of the local police, and that action was taken only against him.

The petitioner further claimed that when he approached the CM Helpline over alleged police harassment, pressure was mounted on him to withdraw the complaint. When he refused, police personnel allegedly picked up Shukla, his wife and minor son from their home and took them to the Sagara police station. Their mobile phones were allegedly confiscated, and the helpline complaint was closed without consent.

Taking note of the allegations, the High Court directed the authorities to produce CCTV footage of the police station covering October 24 to 26, 2025, and November 13 to 15, 2025, to ascertain the sequence of events. The court also sought to know why departmental and criminal action should not be initiated if the allegations are found to be true.

The directions have caused unease within the police department, with officials preparing reports for submission to the court. The matter will be taken up for further hearing after the responses and footage are examined.
