Honeymoon Murder Suspect Released on Bail; Family to Appeal

Sonam Raghuvanshi granted bail after court finds procedural lapses. Victim's family vows High Court challenge, citing justice system failures.

Honeymoon Murder Suspect Released on Bail; Family Vows High Court Appeal

Shillong court approves bail for Sonam Raghuvanshi after four rejections; victim's brother says legal process has failed

Accused Released After Months in Custody

Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the death of her husband transport businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, walked free from Shillong jail on Tuesday after the local court approved her bail petition—the fourth such application following three earlier rejections. Her father, Devi Singh, arrived at Shillong from Indore on Tuesday afternoon to complete the bail formalities at a local hotel.

Sonam was arrested in connection with Raja's death in May 2025, just two days into their honeymoon in Meghalaya. She reportedly surrendered to police in Uttar Pradesh weeks after the incident.

Court's Reasoning: Procedural Lapses

The Shillong court's decision hinged on what justices termed significant procedural failures by investigating authorities. According to the judgment, police did not adequately inform Sonam of the charges against her at the time of arrest. The court noted that inconsistencies in the chargesheet, failure to follow proper arrest protocols, and delays in trial proceedings had prejudiced her defence.

Critically, the bench observed that no lawyer was present when Sonam appeared before the Ghazipur court following her initial arrest in Uttar Pradesh. This absence, the court held, violated her right to legal representation at a crucial stage.

"The grounds for arrest were not clearly communicated to the accused in a manner that demonstrated she fully understood the accusations," the judgment read, adding that such procedural breaches had directly harmed her defence mechanism.

Family Alleges Conspiracy, Vows Legal Battle

Raja's brother Vipin Raghuvanshi expressed deep anguish at the bail approval, declaring that the family would approach the High Court to challenge it. Speaking to reporters in Indore, Vipin said the bail justified his suspicions of deeper conspiracy within the case.

"We spoke with lawyers in Shillong. The grounds for this bail are deeply troubling," Vipin stated. "Three of the accused have already been freed—Balveer Ahirwar, Lokendra Singh Tomar, and Shilom James. Now Sonam. We will appeal this decision in the High Court to ensure justice isn't further delayed."

Vipin also raised questions about the legal representation provided to his brother's side throughout proceedings. He alleged negligence on the part of counsel handling the case and pointed to the state police's handling of the investigation as fundamentally flawed from the outset.

Victim's Mother Expresses Despair

Raja's mother broke down during a brief statement to the media, questioning the legitimacy of the entire judicial process. "My son was brutally murdered on his honeymoon, and his killer receives bail? This is what our laws promise—injustice wrapped in procedure," she said, her voice trembling.

She further claimed that members of Sonam's family had used influence to secure the bail, pointing to what she described as suspicious gaps in the investigation and sudden turns in court proceedings. "Our own lawyer appears compromised. We placed faith in the legal system, believing justice would come eventually. Today, I have lost that faith," she added.

Timeline of Events Remains Contested

Raja and Sonam married on May 11, 2025, in a ceremony organised by both families. The couple departed for a honeymoon in Shillong on May 21. On May 23, just two days into their trip, Raja went missing from their accommodation. Police recovered his body ten days later from a ravine approximately 30 feet deep, bearing multiple stab wounds consistent with attacks using sharp objects.

Sonam disappeared from the scene and resurfaced in Uttar Pradesh, where she surrendered to police. During questioning, authorities arrested four additional individuals—Raj Kushwaha (allegedly her former romantic partner), Akash, Anand, and Vishal. One of the knives used in the attack was recovered from jungle areas nearby.

According to the police case narrative, Sonam and Raj Kushwaha devised the plan to lure Raja to a secluded location under the guise of sightseeing. The other three accused accompanied them, and together they carried out the attack.

Competing Narratives in Court

The case has taken contentious turns within the judicial system, with both the defence and prosecution presenting starkly different accounts. Sonam's legal team argues that Raj Kushwaha masterminded the crime, while Kushwaha's defence claims Sonam orchestrated the entire plan. Kushwaha remains in judicial custody, as do two other accused—one identified as Raj Kushwaha's associate.

The bail conditions imposed by the court require Sonam to remain in Shillong and not leave the jurisdiction without court permission.

Procedural Concerns Mark Investigation

The court's judgment highlighted systemic issues in how the case was handled from arrest through chargesheet filing. Investigators allegedly listed charges inconsistently across documents, raising questions about the precision of the case preparation. The extended duration between arrest and formal chargesheet also drew judicial criticism.

"The investigating agency failed to adhere to fundamental procedural safeguards," the court noted, emphasising that such lapses compound the difficulties faced by an accused in mounting a proper defence, particularly in serious matters.

What Comes Next

Vipin Raghuvanshi has indicated the family will file for bail cancellation before the High Court of Meghalaya within the coming weeks. Legal experts suggest such appeals face a high threshold, as appellate courts typically defer to trial court judgments absent glaring errors of law or fact.

Meanwhile, the Shillong police have been directed to continue their investigation into the remaining charges, though the bail grants to multiple accused have raised questions about the prosecution's ability to present a cohesive case at trial.

The murder case, which began as a tragedy within what should have been a joyful family occasion, has evolved into a bitter legal battle marked by allegations of procedural failure, potential interference, and a family's growing despair at their ability to secure justice through established legal channels.
