Police in Gwalior have cracked a murder case in which a 25-year-old man was allegedly killed at the behest of his wife, who conspired with her lover to eliminate her husband as he was becoming an obstacle in their illicit relationship. The victim was shot twice in the head, with one bullet passing through and another remaining lodged, officials said on Thursday.
The body was found on Wednesday evening in bushes along the Nayagaon railway line under the Kampoo police station area. According to Additional Superintendent of Police Anu Beniwal, police received information around 9 pm and reached the spot to find the body bearing two firearm injuries to the head. The nature of the wounds indicated close-range firing.
Liquor bottles, disposable glasses and snacks were recovered from the scene, leading investigators to suspect that the murder took place during a gathering. A motorcycle found near the spot proved to be a crucial lead. After tracing its registration number, police identified the deceased as Santosh Giri alias Goswami, a resident of Jakhoda village in Ghatigaon.
During the investigation, police uncovered details of Santosh’s troubled personal life. He had married Reena, a resident of Mehgaon in Bhind district, in 2020. The couple has two young children, aged four years and one-and-a-half years. Police said Santosh was addicted to intoxicants, and frequent disputes strained the marriage. For the past three years, Reena had been living separately at her brother-in-law’s house in Chinour.
Investigators said the central reason for the marital discord was Reena’s alleged relationship with Amit Khan, a resident of Mehgaon. Police revealed that Amit Khan had assaulted Santosh about three months ago, an incident that further escalated tensions. According to the police, Reena and Amit Khan later conspired to murder Santosh.
Initially, when questioned, Reena allegedly attempted to mislead the investigation. However, during sustained interrogation, she reportedly confessed that Amit Khan, along with his associate Sunny, carried out the murder. Police said Santosh was lured to the spot, where he was shot twice in the head.
Senior Superintendent of Police Dharamveer Singh Yadav said the case has been solved and the motive established. “The murder was committed by Amit Khan with the help of Sunny, both of whom are currently absconding. Continuous raids are being conducted to arrest them,” he said.
Police teams are searching suspected hideouts in Gwalior and nearby districts. Officials said further action will follow once the accused are arrested, and additional evidence, including the murder weapon, is recovered.
