Indore’s Para-Athlete Pooja Garg to Receive National Award from President Murmu

In a moment of pride for Indore and Madhya Pradesh, international para-athlete Pooja Garg (Agrawal) has been selected for the National Award 2025 instituted by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. She will be honoured under the category of Best Divyangjan (Locomotor Disability). The award will be presented by President Droupadi Murmu during a national ceremony in New Delhi this December.

Pooja’s journey is a story of extraordinary grit. After a devastating spinal cord injury in 2010, followed by 13 surgeries and a long rehabilitation, she not only rebuilt her life but also overcame cancer. Refusing to be defined by her circumstances, she turned to sports and emerged as one of India’s leading para canoe athletes.

Representing the country at the Asian Para Canoe Championship 2025 in Thailand, Pooja clinched two bronze medals, adding another milestone to her growing list of achievements. In 2024, she created history by riding a motorbike to the 14,400-feet-high Nathu La Pass in Sikkim, where she proudly hoisted the Indian Tricolour. The feat earned her recognition in the World Book of Records – London.

Beyond sports, Pooja’s commitment extends to social causes. Through her NGO, Pankhon Ki Udaan Charitable Foundation, she leads nationwide campaigns on Good Touch–Bad Touch awareness, self-defence training, cancer awareness, and sports motivation. Her initiatives have empowered thousands of children and youth across India.

Acknowledging her dedication to inclusion, the Indore district administration has appointed her to the District Monitoring Committee on Accessible Elections, ensuring barrier-free polling for persons with disabilities.

Pooja Garg’s recognition stands as a powerful reminder of resilience and the transformative spirit of India’s para-athletes.
