Indore Airport Gears Up for Simhastha 2028 with Ambitious Master Plan

Officials unveiled a comprehensive master plan for Devi Ahilyabai Holkar International Airport on Monday, targeting a surge in passengers during the 2028 Simhastha fair in nearby Ujjain while boosting annual capacity to one crore in the first phase.
Indore MP Shankar Lalwani led the high-level meeting at the airport, pressing Airports Authority of India (AAI) executives for swift upgrades after raising congestion issues with Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu.
The blueprint prioritizes permanent infrastructure over temporary fixes. Proposals include a new terminal building, multi-level parking, extended runway to 3,500 meters, parallel taxiway, additional security checkpoints, and better metro links.
Current handling stands at about 40 lakh passengers yearly. Phase I aims for one crore, Phase II for 2.5 crore, requiring 89 acres of extra land.

Parking shortages and security queues topped immediate concerns. Lalwani criticized uneven passenger distribution across levels and delays in ongoing works like runway recarpeting and ATR operations from the old terminal.
He demanded faster execution, warning against slips ahead of Simhastha, which draws millions of pilgrims.
AAI officials, including Sharad Kumar and Anurag Mishra, promised to fold suggestions into a detailed report and coordinate with state authorities.
Discussions also covered separate VIP routing, stray dog menaces, and radar installation.
With air traffic rising steadily, the plan eyes a 25-year horizon, positioning Indore's airport to manage future growth without chronic bottlenecks.
Attendees included local administrators, police officials, and airport director Sunil Maggerwar.
