Indore elevated corridor construction resumes after four-year delay, soil testing begins

Construction activity has finally begun on Indore’s long-pending elevated corridor project, with the Public Works Department (PWD) starting soil testing along the proposed stretch from AB Road to Navlakha. The ₹350-crore project, stalled since 2021, has moved into its execution phase after receiving final administrative and political clearances.

PWD officials said soil testing is currently underway at multiple locations along the 7.40-kilometre corridor. Portions of the road have been temporarily covered with iron sheets to facilitate testing, leading to minor traffic congestion in the area. Foundation work for the elevated structure is scheduled to begin from February 15, while central line marking for the corridor has already been completed.

The elevated corridor project was originally awarded in February 2021 to Gujarat-based Rajkamal Builders. However, construction failed to take off due to repeated delays caused by design modifications, disputes over bus route alignments, and concerns related to traffic flow. The prolonged deadlock eventually reached the High Court, further stalling progress and raising uncertainty over the project’s future.

Officials said the impasse was resolved after the state government decided to proceed with the original design, bringing an end to years of deliberation. The turning point came following a review meeting chaired by senior minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, who directed departments to remove all remaining hurdles. Subsequent approval from Indore Collector Shivam Verma cleared the administrative path for work to commence.

PWD authorities have stated that no further design changes will be entertained and that construction will move forward strictly as per the Chief Minister’s directions. The elevated corridor is designed as a four-lane structure aimed at easing traffic congestion on one of Indore’s busiest arterial routes. The project also includes the construction of three flyovers to improve connectivity and reduce signal-related delays.

With on-ground work beginning, traffic disruptions are expected in phases. Barricading has already been installed at select locations, and officials have acknowledged that inconvenience to commuters is likely to increase once excavation and heavy machinery operations begin. A comprehensive traffic diversion plan will be issued before large-scale construction starts, in coordination with the traffic police.

Authorities have assured residents that efforts will be made to minimise disruption during peak hours. Once completed, the elevated corridor is expected to significantly improve traffic movement between AB Road and Navlakha, a stretch that routinely witnesses congestion during office hours.
