Indore MP flags airport chaos, aviation minister orders urgent review

Raising serious concerns over mounting passenger inconvenience, Indore Member of Parliament Shankar Lalwani on Thursday flagged worsening conditions at Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport during a meeting with Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu in New Delhi. Senior officials from the aviation ministry and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) were present.

Lalwani said congestion at the airport has become a daily struggle for flyers, particularly during morning hours when overlapping flight schedules lead to overcrowded parking zones, long entry queues and delays even before security screening. He pointed out that limited infrastructure is failing to cope with Indore’s rising air traffic.

According to the MP, security checks are a major bottleneck, with passengers often standing in queues for extended periods. The situation worsens when multiple flights land simultaneously, exposing the acute shortage of seating in waiting areas. Elderly passengers, women and children, he said, are bearing the brunt of the chaos.

The MP also raised objections to night-time runway carpeting work, which he said has repeatedly disrupted flight operations and caused delays. He questioned the use of scarce airport space for office facilities while passenger amenities remain inadequate, arguing that operational priorities have been misplaced.

Taking note of the complaints, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu directed AAI to conduct an immediate on-ground assessment. He ordered the authority’s operations director and planning director to visit Indore next week, review airport facilities with the local administration and public representatives, and submit a detailed report to the Centre.

Lalwani said the minister assured that the review would not remain a formality and that long-term solutions would be pursued to address congestion and infrastructure gaps. With passenger numbers steadily increasing, the MP warned that temporary measures would no longer suffice, stressing the need for comprehensive planning to ensure smooth and safe airport operations in the commercial hub of central India.
