Jabalpur Triple Talaq Case: Man Divorces Wife at Wedding, Marries Another

Jabalpur woman alleges husband gave triple talaq at wedding function, married another woman. Police register case, search for accused.

The victim claims her husband pronounced 'talaq' thrice in front of relatives at a wedding ceremony and subsequently brought another woman into their home.

A case of triple talaq has surfaced in Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur district, with a woman alleging that her husband pronounced instant divorce and threw her out of the house. The complainant, identified as Taslim, a resident of the Gada police station area, has also accused her husband of having an affair and entering into a second marriage.

According to the police, a case has been registered based on the woman's complaint and an investigation has been initiated.

What the Victim Told Police

Taslim told police that her marriage to Mohammad Shahnawaz, a resident of Bade Madar Chhalla, took place about three years ago. Initially, everything was normal. But over time, her husband's behaviour changed — he would return home late at night and allegedly beat her when questioned.

A few months ago, the woman came to know that her husband was having an affair with another woman. Initially, he would visit her occasionally, but later started staying there frequently, sometimes spending entire nights away from home.

The Alleged Incident

According to the victim, the couple had been facing constant disputes for the past week. Her husband repeatedly asked her to go to her parental home and allegedly stopped giving her money for household expenses. She also claims he stopped taking responsibility for their children.

On Wednesday night, during a wedding function at a relative's place, her husband allegedly pronounced "talaq" three times in front of everyone and left the spot.

Taslim further alleged that the woman with whom her husband was having an affair has now been brought into their house. She said threats of dire consequences are being given to her if she protests.

Police Investigation Underway

Gada police station in-charge Prasann Sharma said a case has been registered based on the woman's complaint. The accused husband, Mohammad Shahnawaz, is being searched for, and investigation is ongoing.

Legal Context

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, makes instant triple talaq a criminal offence punishable with imprisonment of up to three years and a fine. The law was enacted after the Supreme Court declared the practice unconstitutional in 2017.

This case comes amid broader debates over the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code and the protection of women's rights in marriage. The police have not yet made any arrests in the matter.

Further details are awaited as the investigation continues.
