Divya Gehlot, wife of Devendra Gehlot, grandson of Karnataka Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot, has lodged a serious complaint against her in-laws alleging dowry harassment, physical assault, and threats to her life. On Tuesday, she submitted the complaint to Ratlam SP Amit Kumar, naming her husband Devendra, father-in-law Jitendra Gehlot (former MLA, Alot), brother-in-law Vishal Gehlot, and grandmother-in-law Anita Gehlot.
Divya alleges that her in-laws demanded ₹50 lakh as dowry, subjected her to repeated physical and mental abuse, and forcibly retained her four-year-old daughter at their residence. The incident reportedly escalated on January 26, 2025, when she claims her intoxicated husband beat her and pushed her from the roof, causing serious injuries to her spine, waist, and shoulder. She was admitted to Bombay Hospital in Indore the following day.
The complaint states that her in-laws pressured her father to pay her medical expenses and have restricted her from meeting her daughter. When Divya attempted to see her child at school in November, she alleges her husband refused access, demanding money from her parents.
Divya married Devendra on April 29, 2018, under the Chief Minister’s Kanyadan Scheme in Ratlam, with Union Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot and former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan attending the ceremony. According to her, the couple concealed several issues before marriage, including her husband’s alcohol and drug addiction and extramarital relationships.
Jitendra Gehlot declined to comment, stating that allegations can be made by anyone and promising to clarify facts publicly.
Ratlam SP Amit Kumar has retained a copy of Divya’s complaint but advised her to register it with Ujjain IG and SP, as the matter falls under the jurisdiction of Nagda. The case is currently under preliminary police review.
This high-profile complaint has drawn attention due to the involvement of prominent political figures and highlights ongoing concerns regarding dowry harassment and domestic violence in India.
