Last Day of MP Assembly Session Likely to Witness Heated Exchanges Over Singrauli Tree Felling, RGPV Corruption Allegations

Bhopal is set for a stormy final day of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly’s winter session on Friday, with opposition legislators preparing to press the government on large-scale tree felling in Singrauli and alleged corruption at Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya (RGPV). The issues will be raised through calling attention motions after the question hour and official announcements.

Congress MLAs Dr. Vikrant Bhuria of Jhabua and Jaivardhan Singh are expected to confront the Forest Department over what they describe as the “illegal massacre” of nearly six lakh trees in Singrauli. According to the opposition, extensive felling has taken place in areas tied to mining, road expansion and energy projects, with officials allegedly allowing it under the cover of departmental permissions. Some tracts were reportedly categorised as “deforested land,” enabling project clearances and economic benefits.

The Forest Minister is likely to face pointed questions over the scale of destruction, oversight failures and the process through which permissions were granted. The debate is expected to force the government to detail the extent of felling and clarify whether violations occurred.

On another front, Bhopal MLA Bhagwandas Sabnani will raise allegations of “gross irregularities and corruption” at RGPV. The concerns include claims of illegal appointments, misappropriation of funds, irregular construction contracts and questionable practices in institutional ranking approvals. The matter has sparked unease in academic circles and is likely to dominate the session’s second half.

Several other issues are also scheduled for discussion, including the death of a newborn after a rat attack at Indore’s MY Hospital, delays in the 108 ambulance service, misconduct involving a private school student, illegal encroachment in Vidisha and alleged irregularities in appointing the Vice-Chancellor of Jabalpur University. Problems related to rehabilitation in Bansagar project-affected areas in Maihar will also be taken up.

With a crowded agenda and politically charged subjects, the Assembly is expected to witness intense exchanges before the session concludes.
