The Madhya Pradesh High Court has directed an advocate accused of misconduct toward a civil judge in Betul district to submit a formal written apology, stating that an oral expression of regret would not suffice in a matter linked to the dignity of the court.
The case stems from an incident on October 28, 2025, during a court hearing in Bhainsdehi, where Civil Judge Mahendra Singh Mehson reported that advocate Umesh Jain behaved in an inappropriate manner and made personal remarks in the courtroom. The judge later wrote to the High Court, stating that failure to take action against such conduct could send the wrong message and encourage similar behavior in the future.
Treating the complaint as one involving criminal contempt, the High Court issued a notice to Jain on January 9. In response, the advocate appeared before the court on Tuesday and offered an unconditional apology.
However, the division bench, led by Chief Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva and Justice Vinay Saraf, made it clear that a verbal apology would not be accepted. The bench directed Jain to file a written apology supported by an affidavit, emphasizing that the issue concerns the decorum and authority of the judiciary.
The advocate sought time to comply with the order, which the court granted, allowing a day to submit the written apology. Jain is expected to file the document formally admitting his mistake.
During the hearing, the bench reiterated that maintaining respect within courtrooms is essential to the justice system. Any conduct that undermines judicial authority, the court observed, must be addressed firmly to preserve institutional integrity.
Further proceedings in the matter will depend on the submission and consideration of the written apology.
