Lawyers’ Strike in Gwalior Today Over Murder of Advocate in Karera; Around 3,000 Cases Likely Affected

Legal proceedings across parts of Madhya Pradesh are expected to slow on Monday as lawyers abstain from work to protest the daylight killing of an advocate in Karera, located in Shivpuri district. In Gwalior, advocates will attend court premises but will not participate in hearings, a move likely to disrupt nearly 3,000 cases in both the High Court bench and district courts.

The protest follows the fatal shooting of Karera-based lawyer Sanjay Saxena, who was attacked two days ago while leaving home for court. Investigators believe the assailants had been tracking his movements and ambushed him on a secluded route. The incident has triggered widespread anger among the legal fraternity across the state.

Police said three suspects have been arrested in connection with the killing. One of them was reportedly apprehended after an encounter. Preliminary findings suggest the murder was contract-driven and linked to a land dispute, though officials say the investigation is ongoing.

Following the incident, representatives of the state bar body, local bar associations, and court staff unions convened and resolved to suspend work for a day. Lawyers say the strike is intended to demand stronger security for advocates and strict punishment for those responsible.

Court officials estimate that about 1,000 matters listed before the High Court bench in Gwalior and roughly 2,000 cases in the district and sessions courts may be postponed. Litigants are expected to appear, but proceedings will not move forward without legal representation. Symbolic demonstrations are also being considered at some locations.

Members of the legal community emphasized that safeguarding professionals connected to the justice system is critical, calling the incident deeply concerning. Police authorities have assured that stringent action will be taken based on evidence gathered in the case.
