Madhya Pradesh Launches ₹5,017 Crore Ujjain–Jaora Greenfield Highway to Accelerate Growth in Malwa Region

The Government of Madhya Pradesh is set to begin work on one of its biggest road infrastructure projects with the launch of the ₹5,017 crore Ujjain–Jaora Greenfield Four-Lane Highway.

Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav will lay the foundation stone for the 98.73-kilometre corridor, which is expected to transform transportation, strengthen regional connectivity, and support long-term economic growth across the Malwa region.

The new highway will directly connect Ujjain with the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, reducing travel time and improving access to western Madhya Pradesh. The project is expected to benefit key sectors including agriculture, industry, logistics, tourism, and commerce by creating a faster and more efficient transportation network.

Being developed by the Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation (MPRDC), the project has a planned construction period of two years. Once operational, the highway will offer safer travel, improved traffic management, and infrastructure capable of handling future transportation demands.

The route will pass through Ujjain South, Ghatiya, Nagda-Khachrod, Alot, and Jaora Assembly constituencies, directly benefiting around 62 villages and nearly 3.5 million residents. Improved connectivity is expected to expand access to healthcare, education, employment opportunities, and public services in rural areas.

According to the state government, the project will also play a key role in preparations for Simhastha 2028, one of India's largest religious gatherings. The improved road network will facilitate smoother travel for millions of pilgrims visiting Ujjain from states including Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, while strengthening the city's religious tourism infrastructure.

The highway project includes several major engineering works, comprising three railway overbridges, nine major bridges, 26 medium bridges, and 417 culverts. A dedicated service road network will also be developed between the Jaora Bypass interchange of the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway and the Mhow–Neemuch Four-Lane Highway, ensuring efficient movement of both local and long-distance traffic.

The project is expected to deliver significant economic benefits to farmers by reducing transportation time and logistics costs, enabling agricultural produce to reach markets more quickly and efficiently. Better road connectivity is also likely to encourage growth in dairy, horticulture, and agro-processing industries.

Industry experts believe the new corridor will improve freight movement, attract fresh investments, and strengthen Malwa's position as an important commercial and industrial hub. Lower logistics costs and better market access are expected to particularly benefit small and medium-sized enterprises.

Tourism is another sector expected to receive a major boost. Easier access to Mahakal Lok, Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple, and other cultural and heritage sites in Ujjain is likely to increase visitor numbers, creating new opportunities for hotels, transport operators, local businesses, and the hospitality industry.
