The Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple in Ujjain will observe Shiv Navratri this year over an extended period of 10 days, from February 6 to February 15, with elaborate rituals and daily divine adornments of Lord Mahakal. The temple administration has begun preparations to ensure the smooth and grand conduct of the annual religious festival, which draws thousands of devotees from across the country.
According to temple officials, Shiv Navratri has traditionally been celebrated at the Mahakal temple, but this year the festival will span a full 10 days, culminating in Mahashivratri on February 15. During this period, Lord Mahakal will be worshipped in different divine forms each day, accompanied by special pujas, abhisheks, and decorative rituals.
The Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple Management Committee has initiated extensive arrangements ahead of the festival. Preparatory work includes washing of the main temple spire, repainting of the temple complex, cleaning of the Koti Teerth Kund, and continuous sanitation drives in and around the temple premises. Authorities said these measures are aimed at maintaining cleanliness, managing crowds, and ensuring a spiritually enriching experience for devotees.
The festival will formally begin on February 6 with the Bhang and Chandan Shringar, following the worship of Shri Koteshwar Mahadev at the Koti Teerth. Eleven priests will perform Rudrabhishek under the guidance of the chief priest, praying for peace, prosperity, and well-being across the nation. Each subsequent day will feature a distinct adornment, including Navin Vastra on February 7, Sheshnag Shringar on February 8, and Ghatatop Shringar on February 9.
Other major highlights include the Chhabina Shringar on February 10, Holkar and Manmahesh forms on February 11 and 12, and the Uma-Mahesh Shringar on February 13. On February 14, the eighth day of Shiv Navratri, Lord Mahakal will be adorned in the powerful Shiv Tandav form, symbolizing cosmic energy and destruction of evil.
The festival will conclude on February 15 with Mahashivratri, when Lord Mahakal will be worshipped in a nirakar (formless) state. The Shivling will receive continuous water offerings throughout the day, and temple officials said devotees will be allowed darshan for nearly 44 hours without interruption.
Temple authorities expect a significant increase in footfall during the festival and have coordinated with local administration and police to manage security and crowd control. The extended celebration is expected to further enhance Ujjain’s spiritual prominence and reinforce the Mahakal temple’s central role in Shaivite traditions.
