Massive Fire Guts Ujjain Sofa Factory; Losses Estimated in Lakhs

UJJAIN: A massive fire broke out at a prominent sofa manufacturing unit and warehouse in the Khilchipur area of Ujjain on Monday evening, reducing goods worth several lakhs of rupees to ashes. The blaze, which started around 7:00 PM at the facility located on Agar Road, sent thick plumes of smoke into the sky, sparking panic among local residents and commuters.

Emergency response at Khilchipur

Upon receiving the alert, the Ujjain Municipal Corporation’s fire department dispatched six fire engines to the spot. Firefighters faced significant challenges due to the highly inflammable nature of the materials stored inside. The warehouse, owned by local businessman Jabbar Qureshi, was reportedly stocked with finished furniture and raw materials.

While short-circuiting is suspected given the evening hour when lights and machinery are typically operational, officials have not ruled out other possibilities. "Our primary focus was to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent residential buildings," a fire department official stated at the scene.

Police personnel from the local station arrived shortly after the fire was reported to cordone off the area. This was essential to allow the fire tenders seamless movement on the busy Agar Road. Local volunteers also assisted the fire crews in clearing the perimeter as the cooling operations continued late into the night.
