MGM Medical College Freshers Allege Assault, Confinement by Seniors

MGM Medical College in Indore is once again under the scanner after first-year MBBS students from the 2025 batch accused senior students of assault, intimidation, and forced substance use. The students filed a detailed complaint with the UGC National Anti-Ragging Cell, triggering an official inquiry and renewed concerns over persistent ragging within the institution.
According to the complaint, the freshers were allegedly lured by a batchmate to a private flat, where four seniors from the 2024 batch confined them for nearly three hours. The students claim they were slapped, verbally abused, and forced to smoke and consume alcohol, while being threatened against reporting the matter. They described themselves as “terrified, mentally disturbed, and living in constant fear.”
Following the email complaint, the UGC Anti-Ragging Helpline issued a notice to the college administration. The directive instructed MGM to identify and counsel the complainants, ensure their safety, launch a formal inquiry, and submit a detailed action report. The advisory also reminded the institution of its obligation to protect the victims from retaliation.
The college’s Anti-Ragging Committee initiated a probe and recorded statements from both the accused and the complainants. Dean Dr. Arvind Ghanghoriya confirmed that four students have been suspended for one month based on the committee’s recommendations.
The episode adds to a troubling series of ragging-related incidents reported from MGM over the past two years. Recent cases include allegations by a postgraduate doctor who claimed severe mental harassment by seniors, and earlier complaints from hostellers who reported physical abuse, forced exercises, and intimidation. In December 2024, the college suspended 11 students and several arrests followed after digital evidence surfaced.
Freshers involved in the latest case say they continue to fear retaliation and have appealed for protection. The Anti-Ragging Committee is expected to record further statements in the coming days, while the UGC Cell will monitor the proceedings until the college submits its final report. Attempts to reach senior administrative officials for comment remained unanswered.
