Minor Rape Survivor Dies by Suicide in Ratlam; Family and Police Probe Circumstances

A 12‑year‑old girl, who had recently filed a police complaint alleging rape, died by suicide on Monday afternoon at her home in the Bajna police station area of Ratlam district, officials said. The incident occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m., prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

According to local police, the child was found hanged inside her home using a dupatta fashioned into a noose. She was alone at the time; her parents were away on work duties and her grandmother was reportedly outside giving water to cattle when the act was discovered, police said. Relatives raised the alarm after entering the house and finding her body. Authorities were notified immediately.

The girl had filed a rape complaint with police just four days earlier, on February 13, alleging that a 24‑year‑old resident of Bhojpura named Roopchand, also known as Roop Ninana, had taken her to a jungle and sexually assaulted her. Following the complaint, the Bajna police registered a case under relevant sections, including those of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and arrested the accused, who was remanded to judicial custody.

Station in‑charge Manish Dabar confirmed that a case has now been registered in connection with the girl’s death. Police have begun a formal investigation to determine whether any external pressures, trauma related to the assault, or other factors contributed to her decision to take her life. “The exact cause of death will be clarified only after the post‑mortem report is received,” he said.

The body was taken to the Bajna Community Health Center for an autopsy, which is scheduled for Tuesday morning. Officers at the scene completed the legal panchnama documentation before the transfer of the body for medical examination.

Family members expressed shock and grief over the sudden loss. Relatives said the girl’s mother had gone to a nearby river to wash clothes and her father was out for labour work at the time, leaving the young child alone at home. The grandmother’s discovery of the body resulted in immediate distress for the family, which is now reeling from the tragedy.

Police are recording statements from relatives and neighbours as part of the probe. Investigators are also reviewing whether emotional distress resulting from the reported assault or other pressures might have played a role in her suicide. The case highlights broader concerns related to child sexual abuse, trauma and psychological support available to survivors.

Law enforcement has reiterated that conclusions regarding motive or external influence will depend on detailed inquiry and medical findings, which will be released once available.
